There’s a real sense of purpose in that, a feeling that you’re making a lasting difference in people’s lives. That’s a great question. Effective estate planning isn’t just about drafting documents; it’s about a holistic approach, understanding a client’s values, goals, and family dynamics. It’s like building a house—you need a strong foundation and a well-thought-out blueprint. We begin by identifying our client’s objectives, such as protecting minor children, minimizing estate taxes, or ensuring a smooth transition of family businesses. Then we gather all the necessary information, including assets, liabilities, and beneficiary designations. From there, we create the legal documents – wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and advance healthcare directives – tailored to their specific needs.
But it doesn’t stop there. We also focus on funding the trust, which means transferring assets into the trust’s ownership. This is often overlooked, but it’s crucial for avoiding probate. A fireproof safe is a good option, but it’s crucial that your executor and agent know where it is and how to access it. Many clients also choose to keep copies at our office, which provides an extra layer of security and convenience.
We also recommend creating a checklist or summary of your plan, outlining key assets, beneficiaries, and instructions. This can be a lifesaver for your executor, especially if they’re unfamiliar with your finances. It’s also helpful to provide copies of relevant documents to your chosen agents, such as your healthcare agent and financial power of attorney. Make sure they understand their roles and responsibilities. We encourage clients to keep a digital backup of all their documents as well, stored securely in the cloud. This can be particularly useful in case of a natural disaster or other unforeseen event.

About Estate Planning Law – Ted Cook
Ted enjoys working with clients to create a custom estate plan to protect their assets and to make sure their wishes are reflected in their estate plan. He treats each client as an individual and takes pride in the level of service he provides.
Ted graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy and was commissioned an Ensign in the U.S. Navy. In the Navy, he was a Surface Warfare Officer and served on three ships on the West Coast. While in the Navy, Ted attended the University of San Diego School of Law where he received his Juris Doctrate degree in 1989. After law school, Ted continued his active duty service in the Navy as a Judge Advocate General Corps officer. After retiring from the Navy in 2011, Ted became a partner with Tom Henry in the law firm of Henry & Cook, LLP focusing on estate planning. Upon the passing of Tom Henry in 2022, Ted started his own firm and continues to help his clients create estate plans that are individually tailored to meet their needs.
